Many of La Tour\’s paintings are illuminated by a single source of light, with deep contrasts of light and shade, such as this one in which St. Joseph\’s candle is the evident source, but positioned in such a way that it seems that the source is the Child Himself, Christ the Light of the world. The realism of the shepherds is also very convincing.
