Joseph is pictured as a traveler, his feet still in movement, and carrying a knapsack. He represents all those who journey under God’s providence. He is like his namesake, Jacob’s son, that “master dreamer” (Genesis 37:19). He was told by an angel in dreams not to fear to take Mary his wife, and later to travel to Egypt with her and the Child.
