The Holy Family forms a triangle, as the earthly trinity imaging the Divine Trinity (symbolized also by the three legs of the manger). Joseph is absorbed in adoration, even in his protective posture. The yellow-ochre of his mantle alludes to his Jewish race, to faith, purity, eternity. His violet tunic indicates temperance and wisdom, but also a prelude to the passion and death of the Savior, which explains his serious countenance. (The roof beams also form a cross, while symbolic thorns, palm and grape leaves are seen in the foreground.)
