The Bread of Life Enters Egypt

“Joseph opens the storehouse of wheat to the Egyptians” (cf. Genesis 41:56). In the Old Testament the patriarch Joseph was put in charge of Pharaoh’s grain bins in Egypt, and rationed out the wheat during the time of famine. Jesus is the Bread of Life (cf. John 6:36) given to us in the Eucharist to nourish our deepest hunger. The flight of the Holy Family into Egypt fulfills the mystery prefigured centuries earlier. As the patriarch Joseph brought wheat, so St. Joseph brings the Bread of Life.
