St. Joseph, the Worker

Dear Confreres, Lay Associates, Lay Associates in Formation, and Laity,

Happy Feast of St. Joseph the Worker! I’ve been reflecting on some thoughts from St. John Paul II, St. Paul VI, Pope Francis, and of course, our holy Founder.

In Redemptoris Custos, St. John Paul II shares:  “What is crucially important here is the sanctification of daily life, a sanctification which each person must acquire according to his or her own state, and one which can be promoted according to a model accessible to all people: ‘St. Joseph is the model of those humble ones that Christianity raises up to great destinies;… he is the proof that in order to be a good and genuine follower of Christ, there is no need of great things—it is enough to have the common, simple and human virtues, but they need to be true and authentic.’” (JPII citing Paul VI)

In Patris Corde, our late Holy Father Pope Francis reminds us:  “Working persons, whatever their job may be, are cooperating with God himself, and in some way become creators of the world around us.”

These are beautiful teachings that remind us even the simplest of our daily duties, when done in cooperation with the Lord and His holy will, become means of our sanctification. St. Joseph exemplifies this for us!

As Oblates, we are called to work hard for the Kingdom; a mission that can at times feel daunting and overwhelming. Just think – in the constant struggle that comes with hard work and devoted service, Jesus is making you holy. And through your good example, He is leading others to holiness as well! And when we feel overly tired or burdened, let us take to heart the wise words of our dear St. Joseph Marello:  “Whoever goes about his work full of worry and anxiety gives offense to God and does not say the Our Father with his heart. Let us accept purely and simply whatever God sends us, without getting sad and upset.”

Thank you for all that you do for the Lord, and for embracing the challenge to work diligently in building His Kingdom. May St. Joseph guide and assist you in all your endeavors.

Happy Feast day!

United in Jesus, Mary, and Joseph,
Fr. John, OSJ
