Image of God the Father

Note that the Holy Spirit is represented to the upper left, rather than shown between God the Father and St. Joseph, as we normally find. Rather than the common theme of the two trinities intersecting in Jesus, this 18th century painting depicts St. Joseph, father of Jesus, as the image of God the Father. Note their identical visages! Leonardo Boff uses this image on the back cover of his 2005 book, “Săo José, a Personificaçăo do Pai.” While his theme of “personification” may go beyond orthodox Trinitarian doctrine, his work nevertheless provides valuable insight and reflection on Joseph’s role as the chosen image of God the Father.
